What is Cannabis Crop Insurance?

Like other crop policies, coverage for cannabis crop insurance is a seed to sale coverage that protects the plants cultivated by ranchers, farmers, and others. Fire,  floods, hail, drought and other causes of loss can be thwarted by the implementation of crop insurance policy.  Recent fires in northern California exposed the need for this type of coverage as marijuana crops were lost on an unfathomable scale.  Revenue losses can extend into the thousands to millions depending on how many grow operations are lost in any particular area.

Cannabis Cultivation Facility Insurance

As opposed to outdoor cultivation, indoor marijuana grows pose their own, unique challenges as well as benefits.  Indoor grows allow the business owner a great level of security and control over their property.  Anti-theft devices such as outdoor and indoor cameras, sensors and alarms are essential in managing the risk involved with indoor cultivation.  The more risk the owner assumes on their end by installing safety and security devices, fire alarms and sprinklers, safes temperature control monitors and security personnel, the more discounts can be applied to the crop insurance policy resulting in lower premiums for the insured.

With the help of our experienced staff and insurance company partners, we can guide you through the maze of indoor cannabis crop insurance.

Covering the Supply Chain

Whether your business model ends with loading product into the vehicles they are transported in, or continues on with the transportation of cannabis in legalized states, we’ve got you covered. We not only cover seed to mature plants, we also have coverage that extends to transportation of product, delivery of product from dispensaries to customer and any other transportation needs.  Our agency has been a leader in the commercial auto transportation industry for over 35 years!

What Insurance Companies Are Available?

As states around the nation continue to legalize recreational and medical marijuana use, the insurance industry is quickly waking up to the potential profits that can be made.  Currently, we have dozens of both A Rated, Admitted & Non-Admitted, Surplus Lines carriers available to insure everything from dispensary operations to growers to delivery and   pretty-much everything related to the legal cannabis industry.  Our list is continuously growing and our goal is to have the most company options so that we are available to insure every aspect of your marijuana-based business.

What Stages of Growth Are Covered?

We provide cannabis crop insurance for plants in three stages of growth, from seed to sale. The stages are:

  • Living Plant Material: Seeds, cannabis plants at the stage of vegetative growth, immature marijuana seedlings, and flowering mature plants in the growing medium.

  • Harvested Plant Material: Mature cannabis plant material that is not situated inside the growing medium, but is in the drying and curing process.

  • Finished Stock: Mature marijuana plant material not anymore in the growing medium, which has been completely processed and is ready for sale.

What Policy Perils Are Covered?

Coverage varies from one insurance carrier to another, however, coverage is typically available against the following possible perils:

  • Theft

  • Lightning

  • Fire

  • Hail or windstorms

  • Vandalism

  • Explosions

  • Smoke

  • Leakage

  • Water damage

These causes of loss are the most typically covered under most property and cannabis crop policies and we custom tailor the limits of coverage to your specific operation size.  It is important to note that inspections and upkeep of all aspects of your operation are essential to a successfully covered claim.

What To Know Before You Apply For Coverage

Our underwriters review every application for insurance to ensure that all businesses are doing everything within their means to maintain a safe, secure operation.

  • If you need coverage for finished stock, you are required to have a TL-15 or ½ ton safe bolted to the floor (if less than 900 lbs) and motion detectors must be installed in the room where the safe is located. This is only if you require finished stock coverage.

  • Proof of a security system, including a burglar alarm must be furnished in order to obtain coverage.  This is a minimum requirement of this type of operation.  Any additional documentation showing further security measures is encouraged.

  • Your grow operation, whether indoor or out, must be inspected by a licensed electrical contractor. A letter of approval written by this contractor will be required before coverage can be placed to ensure that all electrical needs of the operation are adequate and are not likely to cause a fire or damage to property or product. Regular inspections and maintenance of the system must continue to retain coverage from year-to-year.
